The science behind FLOW types

Beyond horoscopes

FLOW types are built on a validated psychological framework — the most scientifically robust model in personality research. Decades of research across cultures and languages consistently show that human personality can be described along five dimensions.

The five dimensions of FLOW

The five core dimensions of personality, mapped to a framework that is intuitive and useful:

  • Falls (Extraversion) — Do you radiate energy outward, or absorb it from the room?
  • Lake (Openness) — Do you dive deep into ideas, or prefer to keep things practical?
  • Ocean (Agreeableness) — Are you warm and harmonious, or direct and challenging?
  • Wave (Conscientiousness) — Do you prefer structure, or go with the flow?
  • Tide (Neuroticism) — Are your emotions intense waves, or a steady current?

16 types, 4 roles

These dimensions combine into 16 distinct FLOW types, organized into 4 roles:

  • Springs — Deep + warm. The ones who ask the question that unlocks the room.
  • Depths — Deep + sharp. Still waters, razor-sharp minds. When they speak, it counts.
  • Shores — Surface + warm. The social architects. Everyone feels included.
  • Rapids — Surface + sharp. Bold, unpredictable energy. The night becomes a story because of them.

Why the mix matters

The best tables are not groups of identical personalities. They are carefully balanced ensembles.

A great room might have:

  • A Spring to make the conversation feel real
  • A Depth to steer toward what matters
  • A Shore to make sure no one is left out
  • A Rapid to keep things unpredictable

That balance is the whole point. Not similarity. Chemistry.
